Fresh & Easy Holiday Party 2012

Tis the season! And what better way to kick it off than with the Annual Fresh & Easy holiday party, this year held at the Marvimon House in Elysian Park (also home to the Effen Vodka event JG attended in August). The venue is truly beautiful, and with the addition of green and white holiday décor, the scene was set with a festive atmosphere.

Alas, the day before the big event, news broke of financial troubles for the grocery chain. The issues, covered in this LA Times analysis, seem sound, but I will say that Fresh & Easy has worked hard to reach customers through social networking. The Happy Hour Tour has been fortunate to participate in several Wine Twitter Tastings (last September, this Valentine's Day, and this summer) – where F&E wine expert Richard Wherry walked us through the evening’s selections on Twitter, complete with questions and feedback from the participating Tweeters.

HHT regular Kitty Packard and I arrived slightly late for the party and missed the opening remarks, which apparently addressed the news with guarded optimism about re-evaluating the company structure. We were sorry to miss that, but glad to help celebrate 5 years of Fresh & Easy. For what it’s worth, we hope they’re able to continue offering their well-branded and well-priced goods for the foreseeable future!
The party featured wines from the Fresh & Easy collection as well as freshly prepared bites from chef Cyndi Perez, including pumpkin ravioli, mini-quiches, and herbed polenta topped with a blue cheese mascarpone, a slice of pair, and a walnut (pictured below). And the dessert... well, it speaks for itself!

Delicious creations!

The event was also complete with fun seasonal activities like holiday cookie decorating and a photobooth (always in season!). Many thanks as always to the Fresh & Easy team and to Allison Osorio at RL Public Relations for inviting us to the partay!

How does this thing work?!

Effen Vodka presents The Art of Design

Last week, I had the privilege of attending an event that brought together two of my great loves: vodka and fashion.  The event was held downtown at an amazing gallery space, Marvimon, from the same folks as the awesome West-side SmogShoppe (party planners take note!).

Style and booze bloggers were invited to sample five Effen vodka cocktails created by five teams of two.  We were all given a bag of marbles to place as many as we wished in the bottle of our favorite mixologists.  Besides us booze blogger judges, there was also a small group of official judges that include my drinking buddy, The Minty.  There were also a couple of local artwork and jewelry on display.

Here’s a rundown of the cocktails -

Team Red: Old Thyme

Effen, Blackberry, Lemon, & Basil

A cocktail with blackberry would normally be a favorite of mine, but unfortunately the cocktails (yes, I went back for more – tee hee!) I did try had big blocks of ice that made it difficult to drink. I’m not sure if that was a mixology call or just a bad bunch of ice.

Team Orange: 99 Degrees in the Shade

Effen, Mint Infused Simple Syrup, Strawberries, Jalapeño & Cucumber

Normally, I’m not a fan of drinks with any kind of spice, but this cocktail was my second favorite of the night. I really think it was the mint infused simple syrup that blended the flavors together so well.

Team Yellow: Smooth Operator

Effen Black Cherry, Simple Syrup, Lime, & Ginger

I didn’t get the opportunity for a full drink due to the photo shoot at this station so I moved on to another station. However, this drink was voted the top drink by the official judges.

Team Blue: Old Thyme

Effen, Thyme, Blueberry, & Peach Bitters

This cocktail was my favorite and later won the vote for fan favorite.  I liked this drink so much that I went back to the station a couple of times.  When I order a drink, it’s usually just one ingredient that I favor but in this case I loved everything mixed together. Plus, it helped that the guys had so much energy and offered high fives in exchange for marbles!

Team Purple: Mango Tango

Effen, Mango, Yellow Bell Pepper, & Cilantro

This cocktail was good, but just not my cup of… vodka.  They definitely get props for the originality of adding yellow bell pepper.

While I only got to check out the display of jewelry by Luv AJ, it was fabulous to see so many fashionable bloggers in the house. I got to catch up with Laurie, Kelsi, Rahiel, and meet a few others. My favorite meet was Grasie of Style Me Grasie! See you if you can spot me in her post!

It wouldn't be a booze/fashion post without sharing what I was wearing - be kind, Joan Rivers!
Thanks again to the folks at Brand Influencers for the invite!

Fresh & Easy Twitter Wine Tasting: Summer Spirits

A new season, a new Fresh & Easy Wine Tasting Twitter Party! To kick off summer with their new wine specialties, Fresh & Easy grocery store invited The Happy Hour Tour and a mix of other food & drink bloggers to join in for their 3rd Twitter Wine Tasting Party. For this party, F&E mailed out gift cards so we could all pick up the wines at our local stores and recommended some delicious bites we could pair with the wine selection. Here’s all the wonderful stuff we tried:

  • Charonge Wine – just kidding, we didn’t try this one as our Hollywood store didn’t carry it (we got you, didn't we?!). But what we did learn was that the Charonge wine (Chardonnay with pure distilled orange) was dreamed up whilst its inventor was drinking Blue Moon, the perfect beer to drink with a slice of orange – he just figured why not try it with wine. Most of the group really enjoyed the wine though one Debbie Downer asked “so it’s basically just chardonnay and triple sec?” Fresh & Easy wine master Richard Wherry answered humorously, “Basically.” Wherry also discussed a possible 2nd wine blend – Lemon Grigio! My recommendation of Shirazberry was not responded to :).
  • Big Kahuna Red Sangria – An awesome sangria that comes in a large plastic bottle and retails for $4 here in California, this sweet treat would be an ideal summer picnic or barbecue wine. A lot of us in the Twitter party have made our own sangria, but most of us agreed that the Big Kahuna version would be an easy and fine substitute if you’re low on time. We enjoyed our sangria with Manchego cheese and stoned wheat crackers along with Dalmatia Fig spread. So good I could cry!

The Vittles - Cheese Plate and Pizza!
  • I Heart California Red Wine Blend – Here at HHT, we are true lovers of red blends and this Fresh & Easy brand bottle was a delight – full bodied and round with a smooth red fruit finish. We loved this with Fresh & Easy’s Tomato & Basil pizza and its almost-sweet crust.

An hour in and 2 bottles half-drank, the party wrapped up with talk of a Beer Tasting Twitter party later this summer. We might need to find some nice beer menz to partake in this gastro-culinary endeavor! If you know any, send ‘em our way!

Twitter Wine Tasting: Valentine’s Day

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, The Happy Hour Tour was invited to participate in Fresh & Easy’s Twitter Wine Tasting, a way-fun at-home wine party where fellow food and drink bloggers tweet about 3 wines handpicked by Fresh & Easy’s resident wine buyer, Richard Wherry.

JG and our Twitter Wine Tasting Spread!

Our party kicked off at HHT Headquarters with a “Pretty in Pink” theme, ok we just watched the movie and had some fuchsia raspberries to pair with our cheddar cheese marbled with chocolate (wowee zowee!). It also suited our delicious first wine selection, the Montcadi Cava, a Spanish sparkling wine, that was perfect on its own or would be terrific in a mimosa (as our helpful Fresh & Easy grocer recommended). The wine turned out to be our favorite of the evening and we easily finished the bottle that night!

Our wines for the evening, notice whose on the attack in the background!

Our second selection took us to Italy, the Ombretta Chianti. The Happy Hour Tour was the first Tweeter to make a SILENCE OF THE LAMBS joke (of course about chianti and fava beans) – total bragging rights, we know. As our sommelier informed us, the woodsy scent of the wine comes from its four months in French oak – elevating the aromatics and adding depth. He also noted that the high acidity in the wine makes it a great pair with tomato-based foods and charcuterie. That’s a lot more in depth than what we came up with; we merely enjoyed the wine with cheese and crackers, but… didn’t finish the bottle.

Mad scientist JB opening the Chianti!

Our final selection was right on for the Valentine’s season, where chocolate can be found in anything and everything (eg cheese), Chocolate Shop wine. Made in Washington State’s Columbia Valley, the chocolate wine is created by adding dark chocolate extract to just fermented Merlot and Syrah grapes. The wine smelled positively awesome – just like chocolate and wine – but we found the taste to be a somewhat acquired one, a little too chocolate extract-y. Not exactly our cup of chocolate, but still pretty yum.

Somebody loves wine (bottles)!

After an hour or so of tasting/tweeting/taking pictures, we said goodbye to our fellow Fresh & Easy friends and continued our party at Happy Hour Tour HQ #2, The Woods! Speaking of which, be sure to watch “Justified” on FX; our bartender pal Brendan (also a werewolf in “True Blood”) plays a bad guy this season!!

Special thanks to Richard Wherry, Allison Osorio, and the entire Fresh & Easy gang!

Media Event: Fresh & Easy Twitter Tasting

As always, we are super-stoked whenever a company reaches out to The Happy Hour Tour to cover their events… and we both also like eating in bed (incongruous, but go with us on this). So we were beyond excited when Fresh & Easy reached out to the HHT to join their Twitter Tasting on Thursday, September 29th - where we tried 3 new wines while in the comfort of our own home. Pretty genius actually.

*You might note I pulled the wrong bottle of white out of the fridge for this glamour shot ;)!

JG & I both like the Fresh & Easy brand - not only because of their name is just like we like our call-girls, but also because it's a local market with good prices and an emphasis on saving its customers money "from the ground up" (cement floors instead of pricier tiles, energy efficient bulbs, etc). They also have a phenomenal wine selection, many exclusive to Fresh & Easy, at terrific prices. As gals on a budget, we're partial to the Big Kahuna family, which gives 2-buck-Chuck a run for its $2, with swell varietal offerings for under $3 a bottle. Plus, rumor has it they just added 6 new Kahuna wines!

As part of the Twitter* Tasting, Fresh & Easy mailed us a box of 3 different wines (normally priced from $5-11) to sample from. And then we logged onto TasteLive.com and here's what we tried and learned:

-- Dreamstone Pink Moscato – a Spanish wine; pink, delicious and fizzy! It was a JG favorite.

-- Ma Cherie White Cuvee – a French Chardonnay with a very basic taste, not buttery like my ma likes, but a nice basic white to pair with almost anything.

-- Doon Buggy Napa Valley Red Blend – a California red blend (my favorite!) with a very smoky and oak-y flavor, autumn-tinged perfect after fall day of raking leaves (not in LA though :)!

It was fun sampling the wines and trying to keep up with the live Twitter feed – favorite Tweet of the night from our Twitter-friend, TaraMetBlog – “My mother is also joining me in tonight's @freshandeasy twitter party. Although she calls it tweeter & thinks I know u all #freshandeasywine.” Sounds like my ma!

Thanks to Fresh & Easy for hosting the fun Twitter party and to Allison Osorio at RL Public Relations for reaching out to The Happy Hour Tour!

*Follow us on twitter for boozy tweets!

Raphael

11615 Ventura Blvd.
Studio City, CA 91604www.RalphaelonVentura.com
twitter.com/RaphaelStudioC

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the “Sips & Savories” event at Raphael restaurant thanks to my foodie & fellow boozer friend, The Minty. We got to sip on specialty cocktails, created by mixologist Chris Parke, paired with savory bar bites by executive chef Adam Horton. Some of the bites included fresh ingredients straight from their living green wall in front of the restaurant!

Round 1
Cilantro cocktail: Karma tequila, cilantro, jalapeno, cointreau, agave nectar
Crispy Pork Belly: House made French sausage, Brioche, Nuoc Chom (a light sauce), Capsicum, Herbs and Pickles

Round 2
Basil cocktail: Grey Goose, muddled sweet basil, cracked pepper
Grilled Cheese: Aged Cheddar, Gruyere, Parmesan, Caramelized Onion and Tomato Confit

Round 3
Punch cocktail: Myers Rum, Bacardi, egg white, sugar cane, fresh lime
Son Tam: Green Papaya, Thai Chili, Lime, Garlic, Peanuts and Herbs

My favorite of the bar bites was the Crispy Pork Belly. It was very flavorful and did not leave me too full and with food guilt, as some pork belly dishes often do.

After the pairing, I ventured onto the other cocktails and ordered the Balsamic cocktail made with Ketel One vokda, muddled strawberries, balsamic vinegar, & lemon. At first, the thought of vinegar in my drink freaked me out a little bit, but I was sure that it was nothing that the vodka and strawberries couldn’t handle. Sure enough, I was right, as it was my favorite cocktail of the evening! There are not many places in the area to get a well crafted cocktail so I definitely recommend a drink at Raphael.

Balsamic cocktail

This visit definitely has me looking forward to re-visiting Raphael for their actual Happy Hour special – Monday-Friday, from 5-7pm – with half-off appetizers and $8 wines. The new bar bite menu is also available starting at 9pm on weekdays and 10pm on weekends.

Thanks to the folks at Bread & Butter PR for the event!

Check out our facebook page for more photos of food, drinks, & the green wall! If you like happy hour as much as we do, please don't forget to "like" us while you're there.

Herradura Tasting at West Lounge

We’re always delighted to receive invitations to Special Events, Tastings, and Dinners, and so we were of course thrilled with the prospect of an Evening of Tequila Tasting at West Lounge at the Hotel Angeleno (you know that tall hotel you can see from the 405 near the Sunset Exit).

As we found out, the Joie de Vivre hotel chain hosted the evening and a series of other similar events at their other locations to celebrate their specialty line of tequila created with Herradura Tequila –“Splash of Joie in Our Tequila.” Like The Happy Hour Tour, the folks at Joie de Vivre like to travel and journeyed down to Mexico and worked with Herrudra to create this special Reposado.

As part of the celebration series, Jose, a Herradura jimador (agave harvester/tequila maker), shared with the audience how tequila is made – from the agave plant (yes, they had one on-site!) to that essential ingredient for the perfect margarita! Jose demonstrated how a jimador first shaves away the “leaves” of the 8 or 9 year-old agave plant with a coa; leaving just the inside heart, which resembles the inside of a pineapple This inside meaty portion of the plant is then steamed in a clay oven for 26 hours and then let cool for 24 hours. During this transformation, the starch turns into the sweet agave juice. This sweetened agave is then distilled and allowed to ferment naturally in White Oak barrels – with each barrel producing about 240 bottles of tequila. Herradura makes three kinds of tequila: Silver tequila which is not aged; Reposado tequila is aged for 4-12 months, and Anejo tequila – aged for 24 months. Yes, there will be a pop quiz later!

For this special night, West Lounge worked with Herradura to create specialty food pairings with the tequila drinks. We gladly sampled items from the pairings:

• Reposado (Neat – that means on the rocks without ice (great description, I know) with Chopped Tiger Prawn Cocktails
• Herradura’s version of the Margarita paired with a delicious Wes Dungeness Crab Cake
• Herradura Silver w/ Limoncello, Lime, and Triple Sec paired with Marinated Crispy Calamari
• Reposado w/ OJ, Cointreau, Soda and Muddled Orange with Grilled Flat Bread Pizetta
• Anejo (neat) with Grilled Marinated Steak
• Double Barrel Reposado (neat) with All Natural Lamb Meatball

The food was so tasty that I’m very excited to re-visit West on officially sanctioned Happy Hour Tour business!! And the mixed drinks were tasty and quite strong, but not overwhelmingly so.

Never sure who else we might meet or what other blogger-types we might meet at these kinds of events, we were happy to meet the awesome Jessica Ayers, Marking Coordinator for Hotel Angeleno, Merle the helpful Herradura representative, and Jose the jimador. Big thanks go to Jessica and West Lounge for hosting us and to Herradura for providing tasty drinks and an education!

Mas Malo’s Brunch

Parking: $5 in parking lot on Grand Ave. between 7th & 8th St.
Days: Saturday & SundayTime: 9am-4pm

Here at The Happy Hour Tour, we don’t cover brunches. However, I feel that brunch is the most important meal of the weekend and the drink specials are usually pretty epic; still we usually stick with what we know – happy hours! But sometimes, some happy hour investigative reporting requires going straight to the scene, no matter what time of day.

It’s no secret that JB & I didn’t have the best happy hour experience at Malo in Silverlake. We loved the food and drinks, but our service was something out of the recent hipster episode of Happy Endings. Even given that experience, when Mas Malo opened in downtown LA, I was excited to give Malo another try since the scene was sure to be better and the food & drinks just as good. I had tried to go a couple of times and plans kept getting canceled that I was beginning to think Mas Malo and I were not meant to be; that is until The Minty invited me a media brunch.

Every weekend, Mas Malo has brunch from 9am-4pm. There are no bottomless booze specials here, but Malo’s drinks are so tasty and so strong that you will savor every last sip. Before we got seated for brunch, we had cocktails at the bar and I talked a bit with one of the female bartenders about what to choose. Immediately, I could tell the staff was much friendlier here and they didn’t even know I was with the media group at first since I hung out alone waiting for The Minty to arrive. I decided to experiment with the Piñata Smash ($8), tequila cocktail with chile, cilantro, & pineapple juice. Even with the description on the menu, it was a definite surprise of spicy and sweet. I dug it, but for mealtime, I switched to Malo’s take on the mimosa, served with aqua fresca and elderflower – delicious!

Piñata Smash

For starters, we had the salsa flight (5 for $12) served with their regular and chewy tortilla chips. We were also served fresh fruit with chili powder. As for my meal, I wanted to go with my Mexican breakfast staple Huevos Rancheros ($9), but I decided to go with something that I couldn’t get at another restaurant, and I’m so glad I did. I ordered the Del Mar Breakfast Burrito ($12) topped with salsa and stuffed with eggs, potatoes, black beans, and some of the juiciest shrimp I’ve ever had.

Del Mar Breakfast Burrito

As for the case of Mas Malo’s happy hour, they do have happy hour – sort of. They have what they call “Ceviche Hour.” Everyday, starting at 4pm, they have fresh made ceviche for $5. For $8, you can get ceviche and a beer. For $10, you can get ceviche and a margarita. This special goes until the ceviche runs out. At this time, there’s no plan to expand their happy hour deals, but it would be nice to see taco deals like offered at the Silverlake location. If it changes, we’ll be sure to report back!

Thanks to The Minty for the invite and always getting me off my regular boozing routine and out to explore downtown! Also – BIG thanks to Monique at B
read & Butter Public Relations for hosting a great brunch!

Rolling Stone LA

Parking: $2 for 4 hours with validation in the Hollywood & Highland complex

We recently had the pleasure of checking out the new hot spot on the block,Rolling Stone LA, at a Media Preview Dinner. We saw the signs, had read some tweets, and even heard of some big events, but all in all, we really didn’t know what to expect.

Upon arrival, we were greeted – in fact, we were pretty warmly greeted because one of the publicists who was excited to meet us since she just recently discovered our site. We know we’re no Dlisted yet, but it means a lot to us when people are really paying attention to something that started out as a hobby and maybe something that one day pays the bills.

After a quick meet & greet, we hit the bar. Of course. Rolling Stone LA does not have a happy hour… yet, but there is talk of making that happen. Stay tuned… because we will be back! When they do have happy hour, we recommend they keep their tasty drinks & appetizers on special – we sampled the Wayfarer (rum-based tropical drink) and Strawberry Fields (strawberry puree, Chandon, and Vodka) as well as a Trout Toast appetizer, Crab-stuffed Mushrooms, and a yummy veggie flatbread pizza they made especially for JB.

As we are happy hour enthusiasts, drinks always come first!

And then it was dinner time…

General manager Eric greeted the guests and explained that the restaurant’s premise isn’t new, but that they hope their delivery is – a chef-driven concept of classic American food with a thoughtful twist. Executive chef Chris Ennis later elaborated on using farmers’ market-fresh vegetables in all the courses, including those dishes we were treated to over the course of the evening.

Hearts of Romaine, Roasted Baby Beets, Pink Lady Apple, Spiced Pecan, Goat Cheese; served with AMAZING salty and sweet Apple Popover rolls

Pan Roasted Salmon, Wilted Baby Spinach, Fingerlings, Capers, Golden Raisins

Grilled Rack of Lamb, Black Quinoa, Asparagus, Greek Yogurt

Black Quinoa with Mushrooms
Because JB is so VIP, the staff at Rolling Stone was so accommodating to her vegetarian needs.

Seascape Strawberry Rhubarb Tart, Mascarpone Crème Fraiche (w/ basil, fun choice!)

Four different wines were paired with each of the four courses. JG’s favorite was the Sauvingnon Blanc from the Marlborough Winery in New Zealand. As you may remember,
New Zealand was a great place for happy hour! JB enjoyed the Cakebread Chardonnay, which was even better as a counter to the salmon it was paired with.

In addition to eating and drinking, we got to explore the amazing space. We really dug the lounge room that reminded us of a great movie dance off.

You suckas got served!

We also liked the B-Side Room, a small Speakeasy-style mixology bar geared towards locals that want to bypass the more touristy restaurant and lounge, complete with its own separate entrance on Highland.

If we haven’t convinced you already that Rolling Stone LA is an awesome space, there are plenty of places with great back drops throughout for your own personal photo shoots.

Rolling Stone LA is the perfect place to check out when near the Hollywood & Highland complex. With its restaurant, its lounge, and the B-Side room catering to different clientele; great food & drinks, the amazing music (of course!) and entrance off Highland away from the madness, there’s no reason not to try this place at least once.

We took lots and lots of photos that can be viewed on our
facebook page. While you’re there, don’t forget to like us because we like you!

We'll Drink To That: The Radio Room

We'll Drink to That " is a feature that highlights things that have us so excited that we just gotts to inform our readers! Know of a product, event, etc. that you think we'll drink to? E-mail us at TheHappyHourTour@gmail.com!

One thing that surprises people most is that I have never been to The Edison. That’s right – never. Not even for the 35 cents martini nights. So Dan Cox PR hosted an event for press & bloggers for The Radio Room at The Edison, I knew my time was due. Go-to-girl, Carrie, came along from the ride.

The Radio Room is a special event where great mixologists from all over the country come to The Edison to make their signature cocktails for one night. There are no vodka-cranberry drinks here.

Upon arrival at The Edison, Dan Cox immediately greeted us. It is rare that the person who actually hosts the list will greet people, let alone be present – nightclubs take notice! Not only did Dan greet us, but also he introduced himself, talked us through the night, and the press kit. It was a lot of information, but Dan did a great job in letting us know what we were in for that evening. We also had the pleasure of meeting Barbara Jacobs, the general manager, before hitting the bar.

For The Radio Room event, there were 4 mixologists serving up 6 different cocktails total. We arrived in the middle of the event so we didn’t have the pleasure of having a bartender talk us through our first drink choice. We decided to wing it. Carrie ordered the Rite of Spring by Don Lee of Momofuku in NYC. I ordered the Globo Rojo #2 by Zane Harris of Rob Roy in Seattle. Carrie’s drink was not our bag – at all. My drink was much better. It was good and interesting due to its smoky aftertaste. It wasn’t a drink I would have normally ordered, but that’s what drink previews are for, right? With the sweetness of the strawberries and the smoky aftertaste, I think it would be a nice compliment for a barbeque on a hot, summer day.

Globo Rojo #2 – blend of strawberries, mescal, tawny port, & bitters
Rite of Spring – a classic Gibson with a twist

After hitting up the tasty food table of meat, cheese, olives, deviled eggs, etc., we went up to the bar for round two. Luckily, our hot bartender crawl organizer, The Minty, had showed us the best side of the bar, so we knew where to spend the rest of our evening. We favored the side of Giuseppe Gonzalez of Dutch Kills & upcoming new bar Painkiller, both in NYC. His drinks of the evening were the Wild Orchid & Infante. The Wild Orchid was soooo ahhh-mazing that we sucked it down so fast. We were dying to try his other cocktail so for the sake of being ladies of not getting smashed in such a classy establishment, we split his second featured cocktail, The Infante, a tequila cocktail with orange blossom water and a hint of nutmeg. Neither of us are huge tequila drinkers, but this drink was equally amazing! It didn’t hurt that Giuseppe was the most social of all the bartenders, in our opinion anyway. He said that I reminded him of an ex-girlfriend which I took as a compliment since he made us such great drinks. Unfortunately, we got to try drinks by everyone but Simon Ford who works in London & NYC for Pernod Richard.

Wild Orchid – gin cocktail with notes of almond & elderflower, kissed with red wine

The next time I go to The Edison, I would love a tour. There are so many nooks and crannies (good for dates!) that I wasn’t sure if we were allowed to explore everywhere. Naturally, most people hung out at the bar. I would also love to meet Joseph Brooks, Director of Spirits. We spied him walking around, looking cute & friendly, but we would have loved to know what his signature drink is.

Thanks again to Dan Cox for the invite to such a fabulous event!

Stay tuned to
The Edison’s website. The next Radio Room event is scheduled for May 25th.
