When I was first re-learning my way around the Chicagoland
area, I would sometimes end up using the parking lot of the monstrous Mullen’s
Bar & Grill as my turn around spot due to the large parking lot. Silly me, it never even occurred to me
that Mullen’s was anything more than a turnout spot until HHT regular, Tamika,
suggested going there for Thursday night martinis.
Mullen’s Bar & Grill is a huge bar and restaurant that
includes rooms with pool tables, jukebox, patio, & even room for weekly
bands to perform. Every day
Mullen’s Bar & Grill has different specials on drinks and sometimes
food. On Thursday nights, Mullen’s
offers a variety of Smirnoff martinis for $5 each. Having already done my Happy
Hour homework, I knew that I wanted to start the night off with the Blueberry
Dreamtini. The martini is mixed with Blueberry Smirnoff, lemonade, triple sec,
& garnished with blueberries.
Tamika & I both agreed that the cocktail was dangerously good and
reminded us of those oh so good popsicles that came in those annoying plastic
tubes. Though currently snowbound in the middle of winter, I can easily see myself
parked on Mullen’s patio in the summer with a Blueberry Dreamtini in hand.
With strong drinks must come food so we made sure to order
some food before ordering more drinks. During our visit, the Thursday night
half-priced pizza deal wasn’t in effect yet so we both ordered the Fish &
Chips dinner for $11.95. The food
hit the spot and filled us so quickly that we both ended up getting to-go
boxes. I can report that all the
food tasted good when I reheated it later at home, even the fries! However, I
would have loved to have seen some regular daily happy hour food deals since
Mullen’s does have such a big menu.

For the next cocktail round, Tamika switched to the Lemon
Drop and I experimented with the Mad Melontini. The Lemon Drop martini was just all right, but it’s hard to
follow the great Blueberry Dreamtini, in my opinion. The Mad Melontini was
Melon Smirnoff, melon liqueur, sour mix, & Sprite. It looked like it would
be shockingly sweet due to the bright green color, but it was actually strong enough
that I had the slow burn in my throat with each sip. It was good nonetheless
and of course, here at HHT, we always prefer too much liquor to not enough.
With four Chicagoland locations and even one in Pittsburgh,
I may have been one of the last one to hear about Mullen’s Bar & Grill
because the Lisle location was PACKED.
The service was great, the drinks amazing, the food hit the spot, and
there was a diverse crowd of many people looking to let loose after a work day. I see many Blueberry Dreamtinis in my
future. Maybe I’ll dream of one tonight…
