Big Bar is a small bar that shares space with
Alcove Café in Los Feliz. I’ve been to Alcove Café many times for lunch, but clearly it’s been awhile because I had no idea that there was an adjacent bar, let alone one with a happy hour!

If I were to do another
“Best Happy Hours” list, I would file Big Bar under Best Happy Hour to take Mom, especially since JB has been known to take her Parental Units to happy hour at Ciudad (now Border Grill DTLA) or her Dad to Crazy Rock’N Sushi. During my happy hour visit, there were only a couple other people present that were all women on the older & mature side, leading me to think I must take my mom the next time she comes to visit. Big Bar is small, cozy, & mellow, just like Mom would like. Everyone is there to sip cocktails and enjoy great food. I’m sure this place never has drunks stumbling through the cobblestone courtyard.

Every two weeks, Big Bar features a different liquor, and on this visit, the liquor was Moonshine Whiskey with two specialty cocktails on the happy hour menu at $7. Since I was in a pretty sophisticated setting, I decided on wine for my drink of choice. There are only two wines (one white, one red) offered at a $6 happy hour price. Because of the chilly day, I was in the mood for a red wine, but the red wine offered was merlot, a heavy red I save for a heavy meal. Instead, I settled for the Kris Pinot Grigio. The wine was crisp, the pour was heavy so I was plenty pleased.

For food, my friend & I split the Hummus Trio plate ($7.95). I’m not sure what I expected in size, but I was shocked when I saw the plate headed our way. The plate was big enough for at least four people to share! The plate includes three flavors of hummus – original, sun dried tomato, & kalamata olives –served with a variety of breads, plus celery and carrot sticks. My favorite of the three flavors was the olive, and I most certainly would order it again.

Now, this is a hummus plate!

I’m not sure when I’ll get my mom out to this 5 hour happy hour, starting at 2pm for an Eastern Standard Time Happy Hour, but I’d love to return to Big Bar on a warmer day to enjoy a cocktail in the courtyard.

  1. Sounds like a cool place. Like JB, we have been known to take our Mom for drinks too! So we'll have to take Mom and check it out. The hummus platter looks delish!
