During the Rainpocalypse in late December, JB & I were one of the few people that actually ventured out in the rain. Being from the Midwest and all, it usually takes a lot before we stay in because of the rain and skip happy hour. After some twitter chat, we were lured into O Bar’s Happy Hour due to their famous calamari & their knowledge of the Hot Toddy, a warm cocktail with cider & whiskey or brandy.

Upon arrival, Dan, the general manager, welcomed us. I am somewhat weary of letting people know when we’re coming in for happy hour because not only do we want to give the point of view of any person off the street, but in two cases I felt that I actually got worse service than if I had said nothing at all. Luckily, Dan & the staff did not disappoint. They checked on us from time to time, allowing us to taste and judge out of earshot, and best of all, they comp’d our appetizers.

For drinks, the bartender let us know that happy hour is “half off anything with liquor.” I ordered a mango mojito ($5). Usually, a red wine is my preferred drink on a rainy night, but I was in the mood to mix it up. The mojito was refreshing as it should be with just a hint of mango, not too sweet. JB ordered a delish margarita with a float of amaretto ($5).

For eats, I ordered the citrus grilled shrimp ($13), not part of the happy hour deal. For an appetizer, you get 3 jumbo shrimp with a slaw on the side. The shrimp were so plump and tasty that if planning to share with someone, you should get two orders because you will want all 3 to yourself. JB ordered the happy hour-priced calamari ($5) & we split the roasted pepper, mozzarella, & basil pesto pizza ($8) – tasty on a wafer-thin crust. Although O Bar claims to have the best calamari in town, the shrimp & the pizza were my favorites since they had such original flavors that they be may be hard to find at another place. Unfortunately, I wasn’t packing the camera with super ISO to get the best photos in the dark atmosphere, but I promise the food is every bit as good as it sounds.

And speaking of dark atmosphere, I would certainly return to O Bar for a date. Although on Santa Monica Blvd. near the heart of Boys’ Town, it does not feel that you’re in the middle of West Hollywood but rather some oasis off the beaten path. The walls are dark, the lights are dim, and there are lots of candles, bamboo accents, & mini fountains. If those walls could talk, I wonder what they would say. “Half off anything with liquor” is a good start though.
