Sometimes being on break from production has its perks, like having the time to make the trek to Glendale for happy hour with new twitter fashion friend, Kelsi of Style Smith.
I never heard of Granville Café until Kelsi had suggested it to JB & me when we met in person at the LA Weekly Web Awards. At first, I was skeptical because of its location at the Americana outdoor mall. I thought if it was anything like The Grove, it may be crowded and not in a good way. Luckily, I was wrong. There was a fair amount of people shopping, eating, & drinking so it was easy to work my way around for some shopping first.
Once we made our way to Granville Café, we grabbed seats on the patio. It turns out happy hour is only at the bar & patio of this rather large restaurant. It appeared that other customers didn’t care for happy hour or didn’t know of it since only a couple of singles sat at the bar and it was a good hour before another person joined us on the patio.
Our server gave us the largest happy hour menu that I may have ever seen. Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo of the menu in its legal size entirety, but I do have the 15 photos I took to save myself the work of writing out all the details. It was a good thing that Kelsi was already familiar with their happy hour; otherwise it may have taken me a while to order.
For cocktails, Kelsi ordered a Stella ($3) and of course, I ordered a glass of the Kenwood cabernet ($5). The happy hour food is listed as “gourmet shareables” so we split the sweet potato fries ($3.95) and grilled cheese dipper ($4.99). The grilled cheese dipper was unlike any grilled cheese I had ever had and I liked it! The sandwich is made on country style bread with gruyere and parmesan cheeses melted with deli mustard and caramelized onions, plus a side of tomato bisque for dipping. The sweet potato fries were served with three dipping sauces – ketchup, garlic aioli, & homemade blue cheese dressing. I’m not usually a fan of blue cheese dressing, but this one was pretty outstanding. We even discussed double dipping to not offend each other.
Granville Café is a great happy hour stop after a shopping spree. However, with its location, I think the weekday only happy hour is the reason it was so mellow on my visit. If people aren’t shopping or seeing a movie, they may not be as likely to go out of their way to stop in. Trust me; the food and drink are worth it.
